Re: AP ASCOM Driver or Mount reported slew complete while slew in progress!?

Howard Hedlund

Hi Andy,

First off, please update to the latest driver.  Yours is from July of 2016.  This looks like a timing issue to me, and there were some timing issues fixed in later versions.  In particular, it appears that the driver decided the slew was complete based on old data from before the slew was issued.   The "Slew Complete" occurs less than half a second after the actual slew command was issued to the mount, and there were no intervening polls that would have told the driver otherwise.  In the meantime, I'll get with Ray on this.  It may need further action; it may already be fixed.   There is actually a new AP V2 Driver version that we need to get up on the website.  It is 5.10.02   I'll try to get that going ASAP.

Re: Re-lubing Mach1

Roland Christen

The only thing I can say is that the Super lube grease we tested was on the thin side. It would have been ok for running gears at the sidereal rate, but today's mounts are slewed repeatedly which tends to wipe thin grease off the teeth. By the way, adding teflon to the grease is a good idea.

Roland,

Hmmmm, interesting.  SuperLube Synthetic Grease is used and recommended by many technicians, specifically for worm gears.  I have some and it sure seems sticky to me.  And it doesn't seem to wipe off.  In fact, It's very hard to get off my fingers.

This is their clear grease in a tube, not one of their liquids.  Their part number is 21030.  Is that what you tried?

We have tried it. It is not a recommended worm gear grease. Best greases have good stickyness and do not wipe off.

Thanks for the info.  I looked on the AP website for instructions to re-lube and overlooked the instructions to remove the gearbox.

In particular, I'd like to know if Superlube is acceptable for grease.  I've used that with a couple other mounts and really like it.

Re: Re-lubing Mach1

The problem with Nyogel (which we discussed a couple of weeks ago; see my previous thread about recommended lubricants) is that it's not readily available to end users in small quantities at a reasonable price.  Astro-Physics can justify spending $$100s on buckets of the stuff, but you probably can't.  You can lube a lifetime of mounts, including your future 1100 and whatever comes after that, out of a 1 or 2 oz container.  Aeroshell 33MS (now officially called Aeroshell 64) is readily available on eBay and Amazon.  Gun restorers and builders like it and repackage it in small containers that you can buy for less than $10.  Since Aeroshell 64 is made for aircraft and is subject to FAA regulations and expiration dates, someone here suggested that what we get when we buy a little cup of it off Amazon is expired, separated lubricant.  The Aeroshell that I bought in a 1 oz container looks OK to my untrained eye.  Besides, nobody dies if I get oval stars due to expired Aeroshell.  But if you're worried about getting expired Aeroshell 64, you should be able to get current product from aircraft maintenance suppliers at any general aviation airport.

AP ASCOM Driver or Mount reported slew complete while slew in progress!?

Andy Galasso

I had an incident last night that wreaked havoc with my imaging sequence. The imaging app issued a slew to the AP ASCOM driver at 2017-10-09 00:27:00.982, and at 2017-10-09 00:27:02.562 the driver reported that the slew was complete (Slewing = False), but the mount was in fact still slewing. The slew actually completed around 00:27:14.

Is this a known bug? Is there any fix or workaround available?

Full log file is here: AP ASCOM Driver Log

Thanks,

Andy

You do NOT need to have motors connected to do the updates.  All you need is power and the Ethernet cable.

Re: encoders

dave@...

I started to think about this for a bit and I understand the position AP is in.

Not just apcc pro users but what about those users with encoder mounts now?  There suppose to get a $1000 refund or something?

If I go to bestbuy and buy a stereo then 8 months (just random length of time) later that same stereo is on sale, I'm not getting my money back.  That's just the way sales go..  Some places price match up to a month later but not months and months later.

Thanks for putting up with my knucklehead questions.

(it would be sweet to have AP install the encoders for current customers for free!  :~)  )

Re: Recording PEMPro Curve with Encoders On/Off?

Antoine PAVLIN

No,

I do believe this would be true if your observatory would be in space, but not on earth surface. On axis encoders will ensure you have exactly sidereal tracking without PE around the mount RA axis, and will remove « oval stars » for unguided exposures of the order of the mount worm period.

You will still get field rotation due to your residual polar misalignement, and you will get stars trails due to the fact that apparent stars movement does not happen at exactly the sidereal rate due to differential atmospheric refraction (the image of the star is shifted depending on the air mass the light must cross, which in turn depends on star altitude).

There was a very complete paper reference given by Roland Christen explaining this, and showing how to shift the RA axis of the mount slightly off the true earth axis direction to minimize differential refraction effect in a restricted area around the zenith.

Hi,

So, with encoders there is no need for guiding for exposures less than 20 min?

Encoders off to record PEMPro curve. However, no curve is needed since the encoders eliminate PE entirely.

GTOCP4 Software Update - VCP4-P01-10 and WiFi_A402

Howard Hedlund

Our GTOCP4 update page is now live on the website.
http://www.astro-physics.com/tech_support/mounts/cp4-update/cp4-update.htm
The current version of CP4 software is VCP4-P01-10.  The package also includes the current WiFi module software.  Some of you will already have this, but many of you, especially those updating from older versions of the CP4 software will want to update this as well.  More recent versions of the CP4 software show the WiFi version in the GTOCP4's Advanced WiFi Settings web page.  If your CP4 version does not include this bit of information on its Advanced WiFi Settings page, you probably need to update.  In any case, it will NOT hurt anything to reinstall the WiFi module if you are already current.  Install the main software first.
PLEASE follow the instructions carefully.  The process is not difficult, but I wouldn't just try to "wing it."
I will be interested in constructive criticism and suggestions regarding the procedure and the documentation.

May Your Skies be Clear, Dark and Steady!
