Re: [ap-ug] two new videos

Anthony, Rolando, et al.

I did not have any issues with a data base loss the way I did it in the video. The new battery was plugged in within a minute of unplugging the old battery. Everything works perfectly with my keypad. BUT, that said I did update the video page as follows so no one would have a problem:

NOTE: I had no issue with database loss the way I did the change in this video. Rolando [from Astro-Physics] did state in an email the following..."You can change the battery without losing the databases. Just plug the keypad into the servo and apply power. Now remove and change the battery and no database is lost". Just thought I would clarify this. Thanks Rolando!

Sorry if I caused any problem.

Silly question with the battery replacement: did you not have to reload the databases internal to the keypad?

There is no problem with static electricity. We change batteries all the time. If it's really dry, just place one hand on the 12 volt power supply ground, or run a wire from ground to your wrist.

The gearboxes in question are the Mach1, 1100 and 1600.
The 900/1200 have completely different gearbox designs and they also already had spring loaded gearboxes.

It's not really sticktion. It's most probably simply out of mesh where the teeth are backed off from the worm wheel. That's easy enough to fix on the 1600 mount. All it takes is the loosen 2 screws to allow the springs to push the worm into mesh, and then tighten them again. In all our present mounts we now have continuous spring pressure on the worm so that it automatically always stays in mesh.

For the older mounts such as this one the gear mesh adjustment is explained here on our website: http://www.astro-physics.com/tech_support/mounts/Gear%20Mesh%201600,%201100,%20Mach1%20-%202014-10-24.pdf

I wish AP would augment their otherwise great manuals with a number of video instructions and demonstrations on how to setup and use the mounts.

Re: two new videos

jmartin590@...

Good videos on the differences. I might add a couple of things though. The big difference is (according to George) that the new lens assembly is no longer all oil spaced. The GTX has the front element air spaced to the middle element and  the rear element oil spaced to the rear side of the middle element. I was told that the new build is better color corrected in the blue for CCD imaging.

The other deal is that the first adapter that goes into the draw tube can accept 2.7" accessories like the 27TVPH reducer and, it can be ROTATED so that a camera can be re-positioned without using the captains wheel that would change the orientation of the focuser. This is extremely handy and acts like a camera rotator.
I love this feature of the new GTX. I can now sell my Baader T2 quick release system.  I just got mine (number 725) and it was worth the wait. This is the finest instrument I have ever encountered. The focuser is just awesome. The tube, and all the ergonomics could not be better thought out or of better quality. Star test was about perfect as far as I could tell with average seeing.

Re: AP 1600 Sticktion?

BigE Astro

Thanks,

I agree.  It looks like the gears were slightly out of mesh.  I meshed the mount last April after receiving it in February and running it as recommended with no modifications.  Then curiosity got the better of me, and I meshed it.  Very easy to do.  Performance did not improve, so the originally received mesh was good.  Then I added the additional load and things changed.   Pretty sure things are back to normal.

Re: Park 4 Position

When I set the hand controller to park to Park 4, it correctly slews the mount so that the counterweights are indeed parallel to the horizon and the telescope is on the east side of the mount, the telescope is pointing south, but the telescope is not parallel to the horizon, it is tilted down about 30 degrees towards the south. The same thing happens when I park to Park 4 from APCC or the ASCOM driver. Same position.
This means that you have not set your latitude setting in the keypad to your local latitude. Check your location settings of Long/Lat and all the other settings to make sure they are correct.

I have a question about the Park 4 position. I believe the documentation states that for the Park for position, the counterweights are level with the horizon and the telescope is on the east side of the mount also level with the horizon pointing south.

Is there a change to the Park 4 position from the documentation or is something screwed up with my mount's declination axis?

I am using a 1200GTO with the GTOCP4 controller and the latest versio ns of APCC, the ASCOM driver and handset firmware.

Thanks,
Kerry

Wayne, All.

Proud new GTO owner here, first post here, hi! Thanks for the add, y'all have already answered some of my questions, especially the thread on apcc install and virtual comports (If anyone else is having problems installing, and they are using Norton, in addition to turning it off for installation, the firewall also needs configuring or it hides the ports from being scanned.. grr. 2 days of debug :)

I set mine up by using a pelican case with the power supplies, fusebox, Icron and focus hub in there. I used nylon cable sheathing to make an umbilical of 2x12Vdc power, a USB extender and 2xCAT5 cables for the focusers. This umbilical goes up through the mount, and I leave it in the RA axis when disassembled. Up top there is a 4 port usb hub, connecting to the camera, guide, flipflat etc. One of the 12v supplies is dedicated to the camera, the other for the dew controller. Cheapo 4 port usb hub hasn't failed on me yet, got a spare just in case.I bundled the mounts power and USB cables similarly.
Whole thing takes about 2-3 minutes to hookup or breakdown.
Some good ideas above for mounting options. For now, I just used sticky back velcro to place the usb hub and dew controller on the saddle.

Al..

The coordinates for my hand controller are -
31.9505° S, 115.8605° E

The mount knows where it is. It points perfectly through TSX. It is also set to get its coordinates from TSX (same coords as above). But if I don't use TSX and just the hand controller, it still points correctly. Its just the default park positions that don't work as per description above.

I am using firmware Code Level V4.17. DB Level 0. The version before this also had the same parking problem as per description above.

Hi Kerry,

I would check that your latitude (and longitude) are set correctly in the ASCOM driver, APCC, and the hand controller (if you had used the hand controller to park/unpark). If latitude was set incorrectly incorrect, then the behavior you indicate could happen.

Is there a change to the Park 4 position from the documentation or is something
screwed up with my mount's declination axis?

I am using a 1200GTO with the GTOCP4 controller and the latest versi ons of APCC,
the ASCOM driver and handset firmware.

Thanks,

Kerry
