Re: Keypad 4.19 update

Roland Christen

APCC and the keypad are two separate programs that can be used to control the mount. Each of these programs has its own park positions. They are each calculated in similar fashion, but neither one of these programs relies on the other to produce any of these functions.

Now having said that, you can park the mount in any of the defined park positions in APCC (or the keypad) and then start the mount with the other program, the keypad (or APCC).

For instance, lets say that you parked the mount via APCC at Park 4 position. If you then used the keypad on the next night to start the mount, you would simply press 3=ResumePresentPosition, and the mount servo would look into its memory to see where it was last parked and use that to start the next session. Simple and reliable.

Lets say that you used the keypad to park the mount in Park 0 and shut off the power. Next night you decide not to use the keypad and use APCC to start the mount. All you would need to do is click "resume from Park" and you are good to go. Again the servo would look up the exact position where it was last parked (regardless what program parked it) and continue tracking from that point in the sky. Again, simple. No real way to screw up anything IF you always "Resume from Park" in APCC or "ResumePresentPosition" on the keypad.

The two programs have their own internal software, they are not related and they do not depend on each other. Same with all other control programs that you may wish to use. All are independent operators, Keypad included. I cannot stress this too strongly, since everybody always thinks that the keypad is the mount controller. The real mount control is the CP3 servo, everything else is just a database that sends your wishes to the mount.

I was following the instructions for the keypad update and after verifying that the mount chip was ok, I did the "3-finger salute" to get the keypad in the state to receive data.  Then when I went back to the update program, and hit "Continue" the program said that the port was busy and would then error out.

I've tried the procedure 3 times and the first part works fine (i.e. connecting to the mount, verifying the chipset) but when I get to the upgrade the keypad it always dies with a "port in use" error.

Now, I am doing this from a Windows 8 virtual machine running on my Mac.  But I don't have anything else running on either the Mac or the Windows side. In the past I've been able to run ASCOM, PEMPro and MaximDL without any issues.  So I don't think there's not enough cycles on the VM's side to run the update.  However, I could be wrong.  Unfortunately I don't have any access to a real Windows machine to do this update if running the updater in a VM doesn't work. And Yes, I'm using a Keyspan USB-Serial adapter I bought from AP ages ago...

Any suggestions?

Do you mean that although I am using use an adapter with a Prolific chip (Win10) I am not supposed to use it for upgrading to 4.19?

I can communicate and control the Mach 1 mount with the Prolific chip adapter with no problemas as far as I know.

Shouldn’t be that hard to find one, in a pinch.

The Keypad Update is a completely off-line

Although we are always warned about NOT

would be nice if someone could confirm that in
this one case, the chip actually worked for
their install. Perhaps more recent PROLIFIC

I've found that when the variable cbxinitslewrate that come within Settings.apdb is equal to 3, the error occur.

cbxinitslewrate=0 ; 600X

cbxinitslewrate=1 ; 900X

cbxinitslewrate=2 ; 1200X

cbxinitslewrate=3 ;  SHOULD BE CUSTOM SLEW RATE

It seems that there is a problem between GTOCP4 and Custom Slew rate...

Hi Ray,

Just did other tests.

1-  In the ap.ini file, if the controller=0 or controller=1, the data transfert will cause the same run-time error 380 as before.  It seems that the transfert is just working when he controller was set to a value of 2 (GTO CP3).

2- If controller=2 (GTO CP3), everything's doing fine.  Changing from CP3 to CP4 cause the run-time error.

Found something weird !!!   If I change the value from GTOCP3 to GTOCP2 and click OK and after reopen the setup driver and change the controller again from GTOCP2 to GTOCP4..click OK.....NOW IT'S WORKING !!!!!  :-)

I will do more test with the software you point me out.

Yves,

Do you have a GTOCP4, or were you just trying out that setting?

The new driver will read and transfer the settings from the AP.INI file if
the settings.apdb file doesn't exist.

BTW, you can look at and edit the settings with this free database tool:

Subject: [ap-gto] Keypad 4.19 update

Marj,

From the Uploading Instructions:

"You must also use a "straight through" (as opposed to a "null modem or crosswired") serial cable. We now have these Straight Through Serial Cables available for purchase, if you do not already have one. "

I assume that the RS-232 cable that I received with my AP1600 last March is a straight through serial cable and that is the only serial cable needed.  The instructions read like you need two serial cables - the RS-232 cable (that came with the mount) and a "straight through serial cable.

Yours truly,

Jack

Hi
 I can't find the download?
followed link
http://www.astro-physics.com/index.htm?tech_support/mounts/keypad_update/419/419
and see where the Keypad and upgrade tool are listed, there is no link to 4.19 and it says:

Download Program to Your Computer
Keypad 4.19 and Upgrade Tool - The upgrade is temporarily unavailable. We are making a change to the installer. Please check back.

????
I take it there is a glitch with the installer? or am I just looking in the wrong spot as usual?

Success! Took about an hour for me. Displayed v4.19 and resumed from parked location fine. Don't have time to check anything else out at the moment.

Many thanks,

Re: KeyPad Update, unavailable at this time.

Floyd,

We recommend USB to serial adapters with the FTDI chip or the Keyspan adapters. Do NOT use a USB to serial adapter that has a Prolific chip.

The installer will be available again shortly. We made a change to the installer.

The user name and password were included in the documentation that was sent with the mount. Please register your mount and we will provide that information to you.

Decided to start a new thread, to make these questions not get lost in the old thread.

When will it again be available? The site says it is not available, check back later.

Those of us who bought our mounts used, what do we do to get a Password and User Name? Do we have to call?

Thanks,

Floyd

In  addition to Jack's question, does this mean that you cannot use a USB to Serial port adapter? You do realize that most all computer, laptops no longer have serial ports, right?

I do happen to have one that has a serial port, but it doesn't have all my imaging software, Ver2 driver ect.

Assuming that only Windows is needed, then I guess this should work OK.

The site says the Installer is not available right now, check back. I guess we just have to check back from time to time?

Also, it seems that you must have a User Name and Password, I bought my mount used, so I am not a registered user I guess. So what do I do to get the Installer?

Thanks,

Floyd
