GTO Keypad
Jeff
Hi All, My GTO keypad has stopped knowing where Messier objects, etc are. It works fine on Stars, Solar System Objects, and direct entry of the RA/DEC coordinates. Is there another potential cause other than a dead battery. I sent the unit back to AP in October to have the battery replaced and the catalog reloaded. Unfortunately, last night was the first night that I could get out to test it. It was cold this winter ; ) Anyway, it is still not working. Has anyone seen a fault that drains the battery rapidly or is there something that I may have forgotten to do to get the catalog recognized? Thanks, Jeff

I noticed in the settings that I could not input -77 for my longitude, it would only take 077 on the key pad. Could this be a factor? What am I doing wrong here? Thanks again. Some New and Some Reprocessed Images
Steve Reilly
Back this past April I acquired a new to me NEC MultiSync wide gamut monitor and I decided to revisit some on my older images as well as some of the more recent. One thing is clear when using such a monitor is that most problems will become more apparent especially if your background is anything less than dark. So I decided to try reprocessing some of these images to see if I could produce what I thought was a better then original image. Of course I’ve learned a few more things about processing since some of these were taken and use new to me processes in software than before so it’s not exactly a fair comparison. What I do notice is that the images will be somewhat lighter on the off the shelf computer monitors than on this calibrated monitor so there is that difference. I do use a calibrator on the off the shelf monitor but there is a wide difference in the two side by side.
The two monitors are both connected to this computer and the NEC is setup as an extended workspace so if I drag this window from Outlook halfway across to cover both screens just the white background is different. The NEC is white while the Hanns is bluish/yellowish white. Anyway, I’ve uploaded several pages that have links to these images. So far there are 10 images each with a link to either a 1600 or 2000 pixel wide image. I’ve just only noticed some deringing on the NGC7129 image and will address that.
Direct links to these two pages are:

-Thanks for looking,
Steve

I will get a new USB/Serial cable first. The trouble is that this doesn't happen all the time but only happens once in a while so it is difficult to find out what the faulty part is. Donghun

Considering these things aren’t that expensive and it’s needed to image I would think it wise to have a spare cable and convertor just in case. It’s the weakest link in most cases.

Could be the cable or the actual device. Just because
a device has been working for two years doesn't guarantee it will continue to
work correctly forever. Most devices seem to have a one-year warranty so you
can probably figure that a certain percentage of devices will start to fail
after that.

The adapters I have had the best success with use FTDI chip sets. The COM port number assignments follow individual adapters, regardless of what USB port or hub they are plugged into. You can get some good FTDI-based USB-to-Serial adapters from Parallax.com -Christopher Erickson

Via your post on CN, it appears u might have a generic/possible counterfeit prolific adapter. The recommended adapters are tripplite keyspans or serial adapters based on the FTDI chipset. Dave Goodyear 3109332436

Retransmits indicate a hardware (serial port) problem. If you are using a USB/serial converter and the USB cable came loose the port might have disappeared. Sounds like the low-level USB/serial driver, if you are using one, could have caused the issue.
