Safely installing a heavy OTA onto an AP900
Hi,
I recently received my AP900 and had a look at the DOVEM2 dovetail plate for my existing Losmandy DSUB adapter on a 25 lb. Questar-7 OTA.
The AP dovetail doesn't quite mate the same way. The Losmandy has two closely fitted V-grooves, into which the OTA's DSUB just slides down, and is locked in place with one knob. The AP900 DOVEM2 has only one V-groove, and a much wider, by about 3/16" channel, with a straight, non-grooved wall on the other side - the two lock knobs act as both the other "channel" and the locks, for the DSUB plate.
My "queasiness" is handling the heavy MAK OTA to get it locked safely into the groove. I guess I would have felt safer if the plate was initially mated "in both notched channels" as on the Losmandy mount. However, the DOVEM2 is very well designed for a variety of OTA plates, and even balance point offsets.
So, how do you owners of C9 and similar OTA's used with Losmandy mounts, do the attachment now on your AP mounts?
Assuming, of course, the mount is positioned and locked in the CWD (counter weights down) position:
1.. Do you preset the DOVEM2 knobs so they are very close to the width of the DSUB, and similarly slide the OTA down the channel vertically (as on a G11, for example), before lock in? Or ...
2.. Do you set the DOVEM2 knobs wide open, and "clip in" the OTA with DSUB sideways, then tighten the knobs?
Which approach is safer, while precariously standing on snow?
The latter approach seems a bit more hazardous than doing the longitudinal vertical OTA slide. It's just that using the two DOVEM2 bolt tips as a substitute V-groove slide, seems prone to jamming the DSUB plate on the way down.
It sure would be nice if at least, some of the AP documentation showed "hefty OTA's" actually being installed, on portable mounts, instead of the lighter refractors, or the large OTA's already pictured in observatories. But I suppose those are AP refractors. Perhaps AP could show some shots of how to "handle" their AP MAK in this situation - that would be instructive for us who already have an investment in good SCT's and MAK's, and just want to safely use our AP mounts, while perhaps avoiding wrenching our backs in the exercise.
Opinions please. Joe

Re: UPS delivery - be VERY careful
Maybe it's time to demand the shipping charges be returned, for UPS gross negligence.
Actually, now that I think of it, when I complained to them that it took "over a week" for my other 3 day shipment to arrive, a couple of weeks ago, the UPS agent told me that UPS has an "unadvertised policy" of REFUNDING shipping charges - but ... ONLY if a customer complains, and ONLY returns the refund, to the SENDER. Then you have to hassle them to get your money back, or the sender will keep it, as a bonus.
It's not much, but maybe it at least it gets logged in somebody's career advancement profile at UPS.
Maybe UPS needs to hire Tom Hanks away from FEDEX :-) Joe

Joe (and Anthony), The down side of USPS is that if a package is lost, there is no one central
company to deal with. There is the US post office and the post office of the

Dave,
I remember about two years ago when I sent my ST-2k back to SBIG for service and they ignored my pleads for them to return it using USPS. They used UPS and of course I got burned with their fees ... over $100
for a 2.5 kg package and I cleared the item through customs
myself or,
otherwise, it would have been nearly double that.
I also have other bad experiences with UPS. I must confess that whenever FedEx was involved, everything was fine without the

problem.
Anyway, I use USPS at each and every possible opportunity. They have fully earned my loyalty and business!

Hey Folks,
I am toying with the idea of controlling my AP1200GTO with a Pocket PC and a USB to Serial Adapter. I am planning on using The Sky and T-point with Mobile 5.1 operating system. Has anyone ventured in this arena before that could give me some pointers to circumvent alot of the learning curve. Maybe there are some caveats I am not aware of? I figured this might be a good way for me to go visually because I will have the Planetarium software to do a what is up in the sky tonight??? Any thoughts from anyone???

Re: UPS delivery - be VERY careful
Sorry, Anthony, my mistake.
My rage got the better of my eyesight. I missed the extra "S". I would guess that is why they called their company UPS, so people would confuse them with the postal service - though I don't why that used to be a good thing. :-)
Seems like the government agency "USPS" is trying harder to get back their old business from the couriers. Maybe it's not such a "snail mail" service any more.

Actually, I was further informed, that if the SENDER asks for a "signature

It takes a long time to track something down. We had a situation years ago where both post offices blamed the other. After about 6 months, the package was returned to us. Fortunately, it was an small accessory.

Does anybody know of any "insurance limits" or problems, with the USPS or the couriers? I would hate to go into litigation for years over a $10,000 mount, as they try to figure out whose fault it was. That could be a lot of lost observing time.
Please comment.

Dave,
I remember about two years ago when I sent my ST-2k back to SBIG for service and they ignored my pleads for them to return it using USPS. They used UPS and of course I got burned with their fees ... over $100 for a 2.5 kg package and I cleared the item through customs myself or, otherwise, it would have been nearly double that.
I also have other bad experiences with UPS. I must confess that whenever FedEx was involved, everything was fine without the slightest problem.
Anyway, I use USPS at each and every possible opportunity. They have fully earned my loyalty and business!
Anthony.

Hi Dean: Sorry I missed you & WSP this year. If TNR would have told me who had my mount, I may have made that trip <g>. One thing to note though, that while TNR did do some really stupid things like this, they were incredibly stand-up replacing a bad FSQ-106 and EM-200 for me. Dear Bob,
Yes, it looks like we made a mistake with your shipping address. I am not sure how it happened since our paperwork clearly states your work address was requested. I tracked your package and found that you have already initiated a request to change the address (which I had planned to do). Re: UPS delivery - be VERY careful
Yes, they have a wonderful tracking service. Makes my PC very happy.
I watched the UPS system track my AP900 order across the USA, through the Canadian border, Customs Clearance, and to the local UPS dispatch terminal - right up to the end point where it read "Delivered - Destination: Front Door".
Sorry, but my "front door" doesn't have signing authority for the $10,000 shipment that UPS left on my front porch.
I was also informed this morning, by the "UPS International" rep in the USA (thanks to Christine at AP), that the UPS - USA, "receiver's signature option" ends at the border: UPS Canada (and every other country) does NOT extend that requirement, after it clears Customs, to it's Canadian UPS driver, when he delivers the shipment at the final destination!
How incompetent. A different UPS policy between operations in neighbouring countries, on the same extremely expensive shipment.
Actually, I was further informed, that if the SENDER asks for a "signature on delivery", it is only done for deliveries to a Commercial destination - not if you state it is a "Residence". Ergo, tell UPS it is a "home business" (commercial destination), I suppose, so that UPS gets it's act in line. That may be another way of avoiding UPS abandoning your AP900 on a porch - possibly not even your own. Of course, that would likely confuse the hapless UPS driver - but then you can retrieve your package at a local UPS store or depot, safe and sound - where I hope they at least ask for a signature and I.D.

One of the most celebrated quasars is Markarian 205, a fairly bright quasar in Draco (mag 15.24), which has led to an interesting controversy the past few years as to whether it is related to NGC 4319 in the immediate vicinity or not. The dramatic difference between the redshifts of these two "players" (z=0.07 vs z=0.006) has led to conflicting interpretations of the redshift and whether it can be used as an indicator of distance or not.

Clear skies!

Dear Bob,
Yes, it looks like we made a mistake with your shipping address. I am not sure how it happened since our paperwork clearly states your work address was requested. I tracked your package and found that you have already initiated a request to change the address (which I had planned to do). Since you work and live in the same city, you will probably get it tomorrow. I hope that it will be in time for your star party.
I deeply apologize for your inconvenience.

Joe (and Anthony), The down side of USPS is that if a package is lost, there is no one central company to deal with. There is the US post office and the post office of the other country. It takes a long time to track something down. We had a situation years ago where both post offices blamed the other. After about 6 months, the package was returned to us. Fortunately, it was an small accessory.

Dave,
I remember about two years ago when I sent my ST-2k back to SBIG for service and they ignored my pleads for them to return it using USPS.

Well, I just had a nightmare experience with FEDEX delivering my AP 600E mount, so don't trust them either. Personally, I am a great fan of USPS ... great service, great rates and never a problem!
Anthony.

Mrk 205 in Draco ... who is right?
Dear Friends, One of the most celebrated quasars is Markarian 205, a fairly bright quasar in Draco (mag 15.24), which has led to an interesting controversy the past few years as to whether it is related to NGC 4319 in the immediate vicinity or not. The dramatic difference between the redshifts of these two "players" (z=0.07 vs z=0.006) has led to conflicting interpretations of the redshift and whether it can be used as an indicator of distance or not. For an image based on 30 minutes total exposure, I kindly direct you to http://www.perseus.gr/Astro-DSO-QSO-Mrk205.htm . Clear skies! Anthony.
