You mean for use as the pier? I’d think, for one thing, that the pole would have poor resistance to flexion and torsion, and be very susceptible to vibration, actually resonant. Do you know of any experience with pole piers? 

(They might make ‘polar’ alignment easier, though…😉)

How about poles made for retaining walls? Treated and designed to be placed directly in the ground. The local supplier guarantees them for 50 years. Cost under $100.
