My MaxIm has backlash set to 0 on both axes. I might play with the Dec setting there to see if that reduces star trails at high elevations.
Your guider software should produce a tracking graph which will tell you what's happening. You could be having a calibration issue, or too high aggressiveness, or a bunch of other settings that are not optimized. Singling out backlash and pursuing it is probably not the right approach.

Guiding with MaxIm using ASCOM Direct (Pulse Guide).
