As Roland said, use mineral spirits to clean off the old grease.  An old toothbrush can also be very handy.  Use lots of paper towels and/or old rags, but be sure you don't leave threads or fibers.  Then be sure to use denatured alcohol to remove the mineral spirits.  Allow everything to dry well before applying the new lubricant.
