If you care, the 200-inch Hale Telescope weighs 530 tons, but it doesn't use plate solves either.  They have a pointing model (I haven't been able to find out who wrote it), and it places an object on or very close to a spectrograph slit every time.  I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it for myself.
