I think if you line the pier with plastic, that would to a large extent negate the effect of the sand on dampening vibration. I believe the sand would have to be in direct contact with the pier wall to be effective. The plastic being very slippery, would allow vibrations to propagate. Don Anderson

Pick the thickest bag you can find, e.g. 3 mil, to reduce the probability of tearing the plastic. Bryan
