Various USB burst data transfer modes can do that.  It's a USB issue.
 
Best solution might be to install a real serial port and avoid the USB bus.

Thanks! Some good points to push on for further debug.

The status quo is:

1. All USB directly connected to laptop. No USB hub.
2. Using FTDI USB to single rs232 to mount
3. About 6ft USB A-B cable to camera.
4. No  other USB connected to the laptop

What can be done to reduce the susceptibility to com-loss of the driver in the presence of higher video data rates on USB?

I'll check the issue with the camera vendor, too.
