I don't know that. What I know is that UNIX can be made to boot fast. I worked on a backup air traffic control system
in
the late 90's. They were using Solaris. Sun Microsystems customized Solaris for them so it could boot instantaneously.
It was really impressive to see how fast that thing could be up and running.

Perhaps Sun just kept a booted instance in memory so they could reboot that system instantly? Here's one person's link

It is my vision that a modern mount should have a general purpose built-in computer system which is open for third
party applications. That would be a real neat solution.
